About Us
Black Hide Beef is the name under which we sell our locally grown, family farm raised, Angus-based freezer beef with non-GMO options as well. Black Hide Beef is a division of Schipper Farms, our family farm located in Martin, MI. Black Hide Beef derives from the theory that black hided beef animals grade better than other color hided animals.
All cattle we sell will have some Angus genetics in them. Our goal is for them to be at least 50% Angus. We believe in crossbreeding. This gives us great mothering ability and carcass traits from the Angus and more muscle and frame from breeds such as Simmental or Maine Anjou. Crossbreeding gives you better weight gains and a more desirable animal because you are taking strengths from different breeds and putting them together.
All of the calves in the program are raised here or nearby. Care is taken that calves we purchase from neighbors fit our criteria to be a part of our program. All cattle are fed on our farm. If you order a whole beef, you can request to come pick out your own at the farm if that interests you.
Beef can be bought as a whole, 1/2, 1/4, or in a 1/8 pre-packaged box. Buying a whole, 1/2, or 1/4 allows you to customize your order if you so desire. We have 3 options for the 1/8 boxes that average 50 lbs of meat each and are pre-packaged. The 1/8 Assorted Box includes an assortment of steaks, roasts, and burger. The Burger Box is all ground beef, which can be made into patties if preferred. The Steak and Roast Box includes a combination of delicious steaks and roasts totaling around 50 lbs. We also sell a 25 lb Mini Beef Bundle that includes 12 lbs of ground beef, a chuck roast (avg. 3 lbs) and about 10 lbs of steaks.
